Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan

Born in London in 1970, Christopher Nolan spent his childhood in both London and Chicago and began making films at the age of seven using his father's super 8mm camera and an assortment of male-action figures . He graduated to making films involving real people, and his super 8mm surreal short 'tarantella' was shown on PBS' 'image union' in 1989. Chris studied English Literature at University College London while starting to make 16mm films at the college film society. His short film 'larceny' was shown at the Cambridge Film Festival in 1996, and his other 16mm shorts include a three- minute surreal film called 'doodlebug'.

Nolan holds dual citizenship in both the United Kingdom and United States. He is married to producer Emma Thomas and the couple has four children together and resides in Los Angeles.

Nolan Trade Marks

Nolan begins his movies and introduces his main characters with a close up of their hands performing an action.Often casts British or non-American actors in American roles. He frequently uses Christian Bale and Michael Kane as characters in his films.  Usually starts films with a flashback or a scene from the end of the movie also when shooting a dialogue scene, the actors are often framed in wide close-up with a shallow depth of field to blur out the background.Frequently uses hard cuts when transitioning to the next scenes ,in some instances, the hard cuts he uses will go so far as to nearly cut off character's lines in order to quickly and efficiently get to the next scene.

The style of Nolan films
Christopher Nolan has wanted to shoot a film with IMAX for quite some time. In 2006, he shot some of The Prestige using IMAX cameras in an attempt to better learn the technology (the footage was just test footage). And as we all know, he shot the action scenes in The Dark Knight using IMAX cameras. Iron Man director Jon Favreau called the result a “game changer”.But what many people don’t know is that Nolan would like to push it one step further and shoot an entire film for IMAX.
